How to use this calculator
Why paycheck budgeting works
A month is an accounting period; a paycheck is when money actually arrives. Matching bills to the paycheck that will pay them removes the guesswork about whether a charge will clear.
The three-paycheck month
If you're paid every two weeks, two months a year contain three paychecks. Assign that extra one deliberately — to savings, a sinking fund or debt — before it evaporates.
Common questions
What's a good buffer?
Enough to absorb a mistimed bill without an overdraft. Many people keep one to two hundred dollars that never gets counted as spendable.
How does this differ from a monthly budget?
A monthly budget tells you what you can spend across 30 days. Paycheck budgeting tells you what's safe today, given exactly which bills land before your next deposit.
