How to use this calculator

What belongs in a sinking fund

Anything you know is coming but doesn't arrive monthly: annual premiums, registration, the holidays, a predictable repair cycle. Genuine surprises belong in the emergency fund instead.

One fund or several

A single pot is simplest to run. Separate pots per category make it obvious when you're borrowing from the car fund to pay for gifts. Either works if you track the balance.

Common questions

How is this different from an emergency fund?

A sinking fund covers costs you can predict. An emergency fund covers the ones you can't. Mixing them makes it look like you have more of a buffer than you really do.

What if I'm starting mid-year?

Enter what you've already set aside and divide the remaining gap over the months left before each cost lands. The monthly number will be higher for the first year only.
