How to use this calculator
What counts as a need
Housing, utilities, groceries, transport to work, insurance and minimum debt payments. The premium version of anything — a bigger apartment, a nicer car — has a want component inside it.
When 50/30/20 doesn't fit
In high-cost cities, needs alone can exceed 50% of take-home pay. Don't abandon the framework; adjust the targets and keep the savings share as protected as you can.
Common questions
Gross or take-home pay?
Take-home, after taxes and payroll deductions. If you contribute to retirement through payroll, you can count that inside the 20% savings share.
Does debt payoff count as savings?
Minimum payments are a need. Anything you pay above the minimum counts in the 20% bucket, because it's building net worth.
