How to use this calculator
Payment shopping cuts both ways
Deciding your payment before you shop is smart. Letting a dealer hit that payment by extending the term to 84 months is not — check the total interest line whenever the term grows.
Don't forget running costs
Insurance, fuel, tires and maintenance often add half again onto the loan payment. A car that fits the loan budget can still break the monthly budget.
Common questions
What share of income should a car cost?
A frequently cited guideline keeps total transport costs — payment, insurance, fuel and upkeep — under about 15% of take-home pay. Treat it as a sanity check, not a rule.
New or used?
This calculator doesn't care, but rates and depreciation differ. Used cars typically carry higher interest rates and lower depreciation; run both and compare the total cost.
