How to use this calculator
Make the number automatic
A goal you fund with whatever is left at month end rarely gets funded. Move the monthly amount on payday, before spending starts.
If the number is too high
You have three levers: extend the deadline, lower the goal, or increase income. Extending the deadline is usually the least painful and easiest to sustain.
Common questions
Should I include interest?
For short goals under a couple of years, the difference is small — leaving the rate at zero gives a safely conservative number. For longer goals it matters more.
Where should short-term savings live?
Money you need within a few years is usually kept somewhere stable and accessible rather than invested, so a sudden drop can't push the goal out of reach.
