How to use this calculator
Two ways to read it
The first number is what something costing this much today will cost later. The second is what cash sitting idle will be worth in today's terms. They're the same effect from opposite ends.
Real versus nominal returns
A savings account paying 3% while inflation runs at 3% is flat in real terms. Subtract inflation from any quoted return to see whether you're actually gaining ground.
Common questions
What inflation rate should I use?
Long-run averages in the US have often sat near 2–3%, but individual years vary widely and your own basket may differ. Try a range rather than a single figure.
Does this predict future prices?
No. It applies a constant rate you choose. Actual inflation varies year to year and by category — housing, healthcare and food rarely move together.
